Flowcrete’s seamless resin terrazzo flooring Mondéco Crystal has been used to dramatic effect at Singapore’s newest urban entertainment centre, Iluma, to create a cool contemporary look that is making waves among the hip, young Singapore crowd.
Located at Victoria Street, Iluma combines an array of retail outlets with a Cineplex, numerous entertainment facilities and multiple dining options, all housed in an eye-catching structure with a unique snowflake façade.
Flowcrete’s Mondéco Crystal flooring forms the centrepiece of the column-free Iluma atrium, providing a stunning canvas for the diverse outlets at this upmarket development.
The seamless properties of the epoxy resin Mondéco flooring enabled Woha Architects’ curvilinear design to be achieved, something that would not have been possible with conventional flooring such as tiles or marble.
Flowcrete’s Director of Sales Desmond Sin said it is this flexibility that gives designers such extensive scope with Mondéco. “The design possibilities are endless. The seamless nature of the floor and broad colour palette means that architects can execute complex and intricate designs using multiple colours to create a concept that is totally unique to their development.”
The glass and marble flakes that are locked into the Mondéco aggregate deliver a decorative twist to the hardwearing, scratch-resistant floor which will stand up well to the high levels of pedestrian traffic expected at the Centre.
Some 7,000 square metres of Mondéco Crystal was installed at 6mm thickness over a second Flowcrete system, Isocrete K-Screed, a semi-dry cementitious screed, providing a high strength, super-flat substrate for the Mondéco.
“Isocrete K-Screed offers added strength and durability due to its reduced water content. This eliminates the cracking, curling and debonding that often occurs with sand and cement screeds, which can lead to untimely and costly floor failure,” said Mr Sin. With Isocrete K-Screed, light foot traffic time is possible in as little as 24 hours, as compared to 7 days for sand/cement, which combined with faster drying times, enables construction schedules to be met in a timely manner.
”Everyone is very pleased with the end result. The Mondéco Crystal really fits with the design style of Iluma and is turning heads already. Plus the easy to clean hard wearing surface will help keep maintenance to a minimum for the owners,” Mr Sin said. The seamless system was also installed in the passenger lift cars, enabling the Iluma experience to begin the minute visitors step into the Centre.
